"We are pleased to welcome Assistant Secretary Winberg to GPS 2019, as both he and the DOE are significant partners in the efforts to attract and encourage investment in petrochemicals and plastics"

HOUSTON (May 20, 2019) – Office of Fossil Energy Assistant Secretary Steven Winberg will deliver a keynote presentation on U.S. fossil energy innovation and opportunities at the Global Plastic Summit, Wednesday, June 5, 2019, in Houston.

His appearance at the event will mark the first time a senior Department of Energy (DOE) official will participate at the GPS , which is hosted by global business information provider IHS Markit (Nasdaq: INFO), and the Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS). The GPS , which has traditionally been held in Chicago, has moved to Houston’s Post Oak Hotel for 2019.

As Assistant Secretary, Winberg is responsible for the management and oversight of the Department of Energy’s fossil energy research and development program, encompassing coal, oil and natural gas, as well as the Office of Petroleum Reserves.

According to a DOE statement, the shale revolution in the U.S has changed the energy landscape, both at home and globally. Expanded oil and gas development has “strengthened U.S. energy security and has also opened new international markets for U.S. energy resources—especially American natural gas.” The shale revolution is also providing new economic opportunities in regions such as Appalachia, where natural gas development has created great potential to build out a petrochemical industry, the DOE said.

The Department of Energy “is working to support expanded markets for U.S. resources, promote economic opportunities made available by the shale revolution, and develop the technologies to increase the development of our oil and gas resources.”

“We are pleased to welcome Assistant Secretary Winberg to GPS 2019 , as both he and the DOE are significant partners in the efforts to attract and encourage investment in petrochemicals and plastics,” said Nick Vafiadis, vice president, plastics, at IHS Markit. “The energy, chemical and plastics investments in Appalachia are exciting and driving tremendous opportunities for a region that has suffered economically.”

IHS Markit experts and other leaders from across the plastics value chain will discuss the slowing global economy, the plastics market outlook, current issues relative to trade and tariffs, and the move toward a circular economy. Additionally, they will address the value chain of plastics, redesigning plastics packaging to use less plastic and to be easily recyclable, and to invest in the necessary infrastructure to increase recyclability of plastics.
